CHAPTER 6

SPIRITUAL TRICKSTERS

The Land of Philip

A few people - including my friend, Kayce - repeatedly asked me the question “Why are you going to The Philippines?” Eventually I got weary of the same question and I found myself replying “ because I like the name Philip ”. Anyway, the question deserves some consideration, so I spent any idle time - for example while lolling around airports or during bus journeys - analysing my motives, attempting to justify this trip.

My main motive for the trip was that I had to get out of Chiang Mai because somehow I found myself in a rut. In this dark hole, I found myself pursued by people I did not want to see. I was surrounded by friendly alcoholics at a time when I craved a puritanical lifestyle.

In my notebook I compiled a list of objectives for this three week stint. Here is my list:

To check out the faith healers as an investigative spiritual journalist (and I really wanted to witness an operation by a psychic surgeon with my own bare eyes)

To take a break from drinking beer because my social life was becoming dependent upon it

To meet Lorraine, my great friend from Australia, who agreed to meet me in The Philippines

To take “timeout” from my relationship ... You know exactly what I mean, right?
